Our first business experience outside Spain was in Portugal in 1996. We incorporated Athisa Portugal together with Ambimed as subsidiary company in the management of health care waste. As a result of our excellent relations, we have established 3 treatment factories: one in Barreiro (Lisbon) in 1996, another in Beja (Alentejo) in 2004 and the third in Oporto in 2005.

By the end of 2004 we already had 3.500 clients between
public and private hospitals, primary health care and small producers throughout Portugal This dynamic was moving
almost 8,140 tons of health care waste a year. Barreiro has become the biggest factory for treatment of health care waste
in the Peninsula and one of the biggest in Europe.

The project is well established and functioning. Given the excellent results, in 2005 we saw that the best for the interests of both was to create a holding company, holding Holding SGPS which would bring together all the businesses that we were creating year after year in this country.

Ambimed
This arose from the union of the companies Ambiface with ATHISAin January 1996. Ambimed was very high in the Portuguese market with integral management of health care waste thanks to the autoclave process and the all-important reusable container. As we have already said, 3 treatment factories are the proof of our success in health care waste management since we came to Portugal a decade ago.

Ambicargo
The large quantity of health care waste that we have to transport year after year to the hospital centres to the treatment factory as us decided to create a new business company whose has the capacity to have its own fleet of vehicles with the ADR licence to transport dangerous goods on all national and international roads. This was the guiding principle of Ambicargo. We founded it in 2002.

Luthisa
In that same year of 2002, Luthisa was incorporated. Our Portuguese partners were very interested in the classic pest control service that ATHISA had been offering since its origin, as well as the fight against legionella and the range of products offered in the white line. It was a good deal!

Azormed
Two years later, we created Azormed for the exclusive treatment of health care waste in the Azores.

Zoomed
The following year, we went ahead with the business project of zoomed for the treatment of animal waste. We obtained the necessary licences to be able to store this specific type of waste in the factory in Beja. The treatment given to this material is the same as we carry out in ATHISA SPAIN . This is our most recent company, but not the last that we have creating in the neighbouring country.
