| Bugs! Get them of me!
Disgust and horror of cockroaches, sympathy for ants, amusement of the colour of beetles, uncertainty at the almost invisible parasites, irritation with flies, terror with spiders …... These unscientific clichés with which we describe insects in our civilized environment.
An environment that aims at eliminating them for hygienic and cultural reasons that a time comes from a specific phobia for everything small that flies, has antennae and bits. Every man for himself!
The huge family
Nine of every ten animals on this planet is an arthropod. They satisfy the essential characteristic to belong to the biggest family of the animal kingdom with more than a million species already known and as many again yet to know. A hard external skeleton (exoskeleton) made from chitin, a body divided in sections and a serial of articulated appendices make the arthropod one of the most spectacular organisms of nature, but at times also one of the most devastating. We have studied this huge family rigorously, knowing each of its members and the relationship among them.

The Arthropod TopTen
The American Periplanet, the most wide spread type of cockroach in the world although it is not the first arthropod in this top ten since we know than 3 out of 4 animals are beetles, nevertheless is the public enemy number for our specialists of ATHISA MEDIO AMBIENTE. They come close behind head lice, fleas, bedbugs, mosquitoes and spiders; although we must take into account the spider’s enormous capacity to do our work for us exquisitely :

A clean job
And cockroaches dirty work in the widest sense of the word. It is they who infest sewers, electric wiring in the streets and traffic light network, sometimes emerging from shower and other dump conduits. Their total blindness is compensated by an incredibly sensitive pair of antennae that sense the least vibration, changes of temperature of levels of humidity in any surface. It seems that cockroaches and rodents have agreed to produce similar economic impact in our societies from practically from the same places.
In the face of this attack,
ATHISA MEDIO AMBIENTE has developed three infallible methods of disinsectation to keep them at bay.
Pulverisation and sprinkling
This is the most economic and effective way of applying desinsectant in the form of powder ( Cipermetrine ) in public sewers, drains and hidden corners without counterproductive effects for men.

Thermo-spray ( see Microorganisms > Disinfecting solutions)
This consists in dispersing micro-drops with a special desinsectant mixture
( Permetrine ) a modo de neblina. in the form of a mist. This technique requires very little disinfectant since its power of penetration of any surface or subsoil is total.
Pheromones
These are tablets that stick to insects and appear to be a safe refuge for cockroaches and other insects. Pheromones are a sexual attraction by which an insect perceive another by long distances.
Meeting points with the American Periplanet
Of the 3 types of cockroaches that ATHISA MEDIO AMBIENTE treats, Surinam Cockroaches, German Cockroaches and American Periplanet, this last is the queen of the party. The Greek prefix “peri” meaning “around” and the suffix “planet” shows that this is the most widespread cockroach in the world.
We now show some of the places it frequents :
Sewers, scuppers and domestic conections to public sewers system

The subsoil of sewers is the favourite places of the American Periplanet. Yet again shelter and food make these zones the perfect habitat in which to develop and prosper. Its defends is to flee as fast as it can. A reddish colour over a chitin exoskeleton, its large bifurcated wings enable it to fly easily and measuring 34 to 40 millimetres it is identified as a spectacular arthropod from the biological point of view.
Garage, bathrooms, kitchen, dining rooms

If it can not find what it is looking for in the subsoil, the dark, dump supermarket infested by hundred of thousand of other like it, it does not hesitate to take over the garage, bathroom, kitchen or dining room to see what it can find and if it is decomposed, even better. It enters through all kinds of cracks, doors, windows and other entrances to a building. For every cockroach that we see, there are 25 hidden.
